What is a contraction stress test?

A contraction stress test is done very infrequently. Oxytocin is given through an IV to cause contractions and then the fetal heart rate is monitored throughout. This is a way to assess the status of the baby. A nonstress test is a more common way of doing this. During a nonstresss test the baby is monitored without Oxytocin administration.
