Salt sensitivity and metabolic syndrome

theheart.org

A large population-based dietary intervention study in rural China suggests that people with metabolic syndrome are more salt sensitive than those without it. Metabolic syndrome sufferers should eat a low-salt diet for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, and efforts to reduce salt consumption should become a national priority in China, say the researchers. (Chen J et al. Lancet; published online before print February 16, 2009.)

Insulin sensitivity in the ovaries and the pituitary linked to infertility

news-medical.net — “Infertility is common among obese women, but the reasons remain poorly understood and few treatments exist. Now a team of Johns Hopkins Children's Center scientists, conducting experiments in mice, has uncovered what they consider surprising evidence that insulin resistance, long considered a prime suspect, has little to do with infertility in women with type-2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome and metabolic syndrome, all obesity-related conditions.View full resource at news-medical.net

Early markers for metabolic syndrome in youth

news-medical.net — “Melinda Sothern, PhD, CEP, Professor of Public Health and Director of Health Promotion at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, will present evidence that supports relationships seen in adolescents between insulin sensitivity and fatty liver, belly fat, and total body fat and identifies additional potential early markers of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in healthy 7-9 year-old children, including fat in muscle cells, blood pressure, physical activity, and birth weight.View full resource at news-medical.net
