Researchers Develop Safer Way to Make Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

newswise.com

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have found a better way to create induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells--"adult cells reprogrammed with the properties of embryonic stem cells--"from a small blood sample. This new method, described last week in Cell Research, avoids creating DNA changes that could lead to tumor formation.

New highly efficient way to make reprogrammed stem cells

sciencedaily.com — “Researchers have devised a totally new and far more efficient way of generating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), immature cells that are able to develop into several different types of cells or tissues in the body. The researchers used fibroblast cells, which are easily obtained from skin biopsies, and could be used to generate patient-specific iPSCs for drug screening and tissue regeneration. This method eliminates the use of transcription factors and increases efficiency 100-fold.View full resource at sciencedaily.com
