New animal model for hemophilia A

labspaces.net

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have developed a new animal model for studying hemophilia A, with the goal of eventually treating people with the disorder. Hemophilia A, a hereditary defect that prevents blood from clotting normally, is caused by a variety of mutations in the factor VIII gene.

Stopping a moving target: Novel compound halts brain tumor spread, improves treatment in animals

eurekalert.org — “Researchers from Emory and the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed a new treatment approach that appears to halt the spread of cancer cells into normal brain tissue in animal models. The researchers treated animals possessing an invasive tumor with a vesicle carrying a molecule called imipramine blue, followed by conventional doxorubicin chemotherapy. The tumors ceased their invasion of healthy tissue and the animals survived longer than animals treated with chemotherapy alone.View full resource at eurekalert.org

Antioxidant supplements seem to increase mortality, review shows

sciencedaily.com — “Previous research on animal and physiological models suggests that antioxidant supplements have beneficial effects that may prolong life. Some observational studies also suggest that antioxidant supplements may prolong life, whereas other observational studies demonstrate neutral or harmful effects. A new review shows that antioxidant supplements seem to increase mortality. The current evidence does not support the use of antioxidant supplements in the general population or in patients with variView full resource at sciencedaily.com

Potential Alzheimer's disease drug slows damage and symptoms in animal model

sciencedaily.com — “A compound that previously progressed to Phase II clinical trials for cancer treatment slows neurological damage and improves brain function in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study. The compound epothilone D is effective in preventing further neurological damage and improving cognitive performance in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results establish how the drug might be used in early-stage AD patients.View full resource at sciencedaily.com

Genome Medicine | Abstract | Systems-level analysis of age-related macular degeneration reveals global biomarkers and phenotype-specific functional networks

genomemedicine.com — “Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness that affects the central region of the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE), choroid, and neural retina. Initially characterized by an accumulation of sub-RPE deposits, AMD leads to progressive retinal degeneration, and in advanced cases, irreversible vision loss. Although genetic analysis, animal models, and cell culture systems have yielded important insights into AMD, the molecular pathways underlying AMD's onset and progresView full resource at genomemedicine.com

Neuronal energy deficits may contribute to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

news-medical.net — “Turning off a protein that helps cells balance energy increases animal mobility and reduces the death of nerve cells that control movement in animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to a study in the January 18 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The findings may one day guide new directions for the treatment of the progressive neurodegenerative disorder, for which there is currently no cure.View full resource at news-medical.net

Anti-sense might make sense for treating liver cancer

sciencedaily.com — “A new study shows that it is possible to selectively target and block a particular microRNA that is important in liver cancer. The findings might offer a new therapy for this malignancy, which kills an estimated 549,000 people worldwide annually. The study focused on miR-221, which is consistently present at abnormally high levels in human liver cancer. The treatment significantly prolonged survival in an animal model and promoted the activity of important tumor-suppressor genes.View full resource at sciencedaily.com
