LDL targets and risk

theheart.org

Many patients hospitalized with a first or recurrent acute coronary syndrome have LDL-cholesterol levels considered normal by current guidelines, which suggests that current lipid targets are not low enough to prevent cardiovascular risk, say researchers. (Sachdeva A et al. Am Heart J 2009; 157:111-117.)

Low LDL cholesterol is related to cancer risk

eurekalert.org — “Low LDL cholesterol in patients with no history of taking cholesterol-lowering drugs predates cancer risk by decades, suggesting there may be some underlying mechanism affecting both cancer and low LDL cholesterol that requires further examination, according to research presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session. Malaria Journal | Abstract | Sero-epidemiological evaluation of changes in Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax transmission patterns over the rainy season in Cambodia

malariajournal.com — “In Cambodia, malaria transmission is low and most cases occur in forested areas. Sero-epidemiological techniques can be used to identify both areas of ongoing transmission and high-risk groups to be targeted by control interventions. This study utilizes repeated cross-sectional data to assess the risk of being malaria sero-positive at two consecutive time points during the rainy season and investigates who is most likely to sero-convert over the transmission season.View full resource at malariajournal.com
