Each year, more than 20,000 Americans contract Lyme disease, with children between the ages of five and nine making up about 13 percent of the cases, according to the Center for Disease Control. Since its discovery in the Connecticut town of Lyme in 1975, cases of the disease have been found in large numbers in southern New England and Mid-Atlantic states, according to the CDC.
