Sanford-Burnham scientists unravel cancer drug's secret to resistance
eurekalert.org — “In a March 19 Cell Reports paper, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute scientists show how cancer cells resistant to MLN4924, an experimental therapy currently in clinical trials, escape death. Resistant cells have a simple mutation in the drug's target -- NEDD8-activating enzyme -- that prevents MLN4924 from binding. The researchers also developed a laboratory method that can be used to predict how cancer patients will respond to this or other drugs -- all before a person starts taking it” View full resource at eurekalert.org

Symposier - Killing cancer cells by targeting glucose metabolism
symposier.com — “Uploaded and shared in Youtube by: VHIRtv — Cristina Muñoz Pinedo. Cell Death Regulation Group IDIBELL (Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge) Oncogenic transformation promotes metabolic changes which makes tumors "addicted" to certain metabolites. For this reason, inhibition of tumor metabolism is a promising new therapeutic approach. However, little is known about how metabolic stress triggers tumor cell death. Glucose depletion has been shown to kill cells either by ne” View full resource at symposier.com

Research makes it possible to predict how cancers will respond to chemo - Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
dana-farber.org — “Dana-Farber scientists have devised a test that can predict how effective chemotherapy will be by determining whether tumor cells are "primed" for death. The discovery suggests it may be possible to predict which patients will likely benefit from chemo, as well as to make some chemo more effective.” View full resource at dana-farber.org

Research identifies how cancer cells cheat death
medicalxpress.com — “Research led by David Litchfield of The University of Western Ontario has identified how biochemical pathways can be 'rewired' in cancer cells to allow these cells to ignore signals that should normally trigger their death. It's one way that cancer cells may become resistant to therapy. The findings ...” View full resource at medicalxpress.com

Exploiting the stress response to detonate mitochondria in cancer cells
sciencedaily.com — “Researchers have found a new way to force cancer cells to self-destruct. Low doses of a drug that disrupts mitochondria allows a second drug to push the cell toward apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Their findings show how this combination approach synergistically kills tumor cells in both mouse models of glioblastoma and human glioblastoma cells.” View full resource at sciencedaily.com

How absent reoviruses kill cancer
sciencedaily.com — “Reoviruses are successfully being used in clinical trials to treat patients with cancer. Not only does the virus cause cancer cells to die, it also forces them to release pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines, which in turn causes the patient's immune system to attack the disease. New research shows that reovirus infected cancer cells secrete proteins which, even when isolated, result in the death of cancer cells.” View full resource at sciencedaily.com
