Today the FDA issued a warning for the drugs valproate sodium, valproic acid and divalproex sodium (sold under the brand names Depakote, Depakote ER, Depakene and Depacon). They state that pregnant women should only use valproate if it is essential to manage their medical condition. They state that valproate has an increased risk of causing neural tube defects and other major birth defects such as craniofacial defects and cardiovascular malformations in babies exposed to it during pregnancy.
