Do high-intensity speed work. Speed work, such as running sprints and doing bursts of fast swimming or cycling, increases blood flow to the area of the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory and verbal learning. Cardio workouts, in general, help activate more brain cells. High-intensity training causes release of certain hormones, including human growth hormone, known as the anti-aging hormone, said Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey.
