As an echocardiographer running one of Europe’s busiest imaging departments, Mark Monaghan has achieved many firsts. In addition to being the first UK centre to use commercial contrast agents, 3-D echo, and 3-D transoesophageal echo, his department - which performs 20,000 echocardiograms each year - introduced the first fully digital and networked echocardiography system in the country and contributed the 3-D imaging component of the first percutaneous aortic valve replacement.
