Depression during pregnancy increases risk for preterm birth and low birth weight

The likelihood of premature birth is even higher for depressed women living in poverty in the United States or in developing nations. Ideally, pregnant women across the socioeconomic spectrum should be checked for clinical depression and treated appropriately.
