Seven Pediatric Ophthalmology Pearls
aao.org — “Performing eye examinations on children can have its challenges, but also holds great rewards. I sometimes joke with my colleagues that performing eye examinations on children is close to veterinary medicine. At times, all you have to guide you is your observations during the course of the examination. Over the first five years of my practice, I have developed seven pearls that I have found to be helpful when examining children’s eyes.” View full resource at aao.org

More Time Outdoors May Reduce Kids’ Risk for Nearsightedness
aao.org — “ORLANDO, Fla. – A new analysis of recent eye health studies shows that more time spent outdoors is related to reduced rates of nearsightedness, also known as myopia, in children and adolescents. Myopia is much more common today in the United States and many other countries than it was in the 1970s. In parts of Asia, more than 80 percent of the population is nearsighted. The analysis suggests that more exposure to natural light and/or time spent looking at distant objects may be key factors. Toda” View full resource at aao.org

Implantable Miniature Telescope Offers Some Age-Related Macular Degeneration Patients a New Lease on Life
aao.org — “SAN FRANCISCO – August 24, 2011 – A new study in Ophthalmology (online), the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, says that an implantable miniature telescope (IMT) makes a positive difference in the lives of some people with end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These patients had lost most of their central vision and were considered legally blind. They had either stopped responding to AMD medications or had a form of the disease for which no treatment is available. AMD” View full resource at aao.org

AAO Calls for Medicare Physician Pay Fix that Assures Patient Access to Quality Specialized Medical Care
aao.org — “The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) late last week introduced a proposal to fix the formula used to establish Medicare physician pay that includes an 18 percent cut in reimbursement for specialists (5.9 percent for three years), followed by a seven-year freeze at the reduced level. Statement from the American Academy of Ophthalmology regarding Circle Lenses
aao.org — “New decorative contact lenses called circle lenses are an emerging and potentially dangerous trend among teenagers and young adults. In response to this, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy) would like to alert consumers to the hazards of buying any decorative lenses, including circle lenses, without a prescription. Any type of contact lens is a medical device that requires a prescription, proper fitting by an eye care professional and a commitment to proper care by the consumer.” View full resource at aao.org
