Jerri Nielsen FitzGerald, who diagnosed and treated her own breast cancer before a dramatic rescue from the South Pole, has died, the Associated Press reports. She was 57. Her cancer, which had been in remission, returned in August 2005, Thomas FitzGerald, her husband, told the AP. FitzGerald was stationed at the South Pole in winter 1999 when she discovered a lump in her breast. She was the only doctor at the National Science Foundation facility....
