Research Notes on Talk Test

The talk test was developed as a way to measure cardiovascular exercise intensity.1 To do this test, one must maintain a level of intensity where talking while exercising is managable.1 When the person reaches an intensity at which he or she can “just barely respond in conversation,” the intensity thought to be safe, but should not be increased1

Fast Facts:

  • New research indicates that the talk test can accurately predict heart rate during exercise.1
  • It is recommended to use the talk test at least once every 15 minutes during aerobic exercise.1
  • During group exercise, the talk test may also be useful.1
