Statins don't lower risk of pneumonia in elderly
eurekalert.org — “Popular cholesterol-lowering statin drugs like Lipitor (atorvastatin) don't lower the risk of pneumonia, according to a British Medical Journal study of over 3,000 Group Health patients. Prior research based on automated claims data had raised some hope -- and hype -- for statins to prevent and treat infections including pneumonia. Elderly JUPITER trial study
theheart.org — “The analysis showed that adults >70 years of age had a smaller reduction in relative risk in cardiovascular events compared with those younger than 70 years old but larger absolute reductions, resulting in a lower number needed to treat, particularly for more serious adverse events, according to investigators.” View full resource at theheart.org

JUPITER analysis of elderly patients
theheart.org — “The use of statin therapy in older adults with normal LDL-cholesterol levels but systemic inflammation assessed by CRP significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular events. An editorial, however, suggests the role for CRP testing is still unknown, given that 65% of patients had hypertension, which, included with their age, would make them candidates for aggressive therapy anyway.” View full resource at theheart.org
