1. What is ulcerative colitis?
The short answer: Ulcerative colitis is part of a group of diseases known as inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers of the lining of the rectum and colon. The chronic inflammation of the digestive tract may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. While there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis, therapies exist that may dramatically reduce the signs and symptoms and even bring about long-term remission.
