Plaques in blood vessels may break by overproducing protein-digesting enzymes

news-medical.net — “University of Washington (UW) researchers have gathered evidence that dangerous plaques in blood vessels can rupture by overproducing protein-digesting enzymes. Plaques are fat-laden rough spots in the otherwise smooth walls of arteries. When a plaque ruptures, blood accumulates inside of it, a process known as plaque hemorrhage. The plaque enlarges and artery-blocking clots can form. If the flow of oxygen-rich blood is restricted, a heart attack, stroke, or damage to other organs can occur.View full resource at news-medical.net

How now, inside the cow: Nearly 30,000 novel enzymes for biofuel production improvements

eurekalert.org — “Through massive-scale DNA sequencing, researchers at the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, with support from the Energy Biosciences Institute, have characterized the genes and genomes of plant-digesting microbes isolated from the cow rumen and reported in a study published January 28 in the journal Science. The data analysis has revealed nearly 30,000 novel enzymes that may now be explored for improved biofuel production.View full resource at eurekalert.org
