1. Dr Stephen Snyder
I received my medical degree from the University of California, San
Francisco (M.D. 1983), followed by internship in the Department of
Medicine at Mt Zion Medical Center, San Francisco. I then served as a
resident in psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Hospital /
Cornell University Medical Center (1984-1987), and afterwards was a
Fellow in Behavioral Medicine and Consultation Psychiatry at Mount Sinai
School of Medicine here in NYC (1987-89).
During my fellowship, I also studied at Mount Sinai’s Center for
Human Sexuality (1987-89), where I received training in sex counseling
for individuals and couples. My mentors at Mount Sinai were Raoul
Schiavi, M.D. and Patricia Schreiner-Engel, Ph.D., two
clinician/researcher sexologists who have made important contributions
to our knowledge about human sexual response and sexual disorders.
I served as Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Mount Sinai Medical Center
from 1990-2000. During this time, I taught residents and medical
students, and collaborated with medical and psychiatric colleagues on
clinical research. I also trained in psychoanalysis at the New York
University Psychoanalytic Institute, while maintaining a busy private
practice of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and sex therapy and counseling.
In 2000 I opened my office on Central Park West in Manhattan, and
since then have devoted myself full-time to clinical practice. This has
given me the opportunity to see many more patients, and to build
relationships with a wider network of medical and mental health
colleagues. I have also continued on the faculty at New York City”s Mount Sinai School of Medicine as Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and have lectured locally and around the country on topics related to sexuality.
I have been an active member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research since 1995. I have been a lecturer and discussant at the Society’s national meetings, and have served on both its Professional Book Award and its Consumer Book Award committees, and am currently Chairman of the 2013 Consumer Book Award Committee.
