Bismuth has several actions in the gut. It forms a coating over ulcers in the stomach and gut protecting them from stomach acid and allowing them to heal. It also kills bacteria, including those which are now believed to aggravate ulcers.It is used to treat upset stomach, indigestion and nausea and to control common diarrhoea.
