Neuropathic Ulcers

Research Notes on Neuropathic Ulcers

Neuropathic ulcers are a result of injury to the feet that goes unnoticed due to a loss of sensation in the feet caused by diabetes. The ulcers are usually extremely painful and tend to bleed easily.1 There is a great possibility of the ulcers becoming infected which will require a regiment of antibiotics to heal.1

Fast Facts:

  • To relieve pressure from the ulcers, some patients use therapeutic shoes and walking braces.1
  • Approximately 30% of neuropathic ulcers heal in about 20 weeks.1
  • Fever, nausea, and appetite loss may be the signs of infection.1
