Michelle Obama, wife of Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, has spoken publicly about her father's battle with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system.1 She told her father's story during her speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Her father, Fraser Robinson, was diagnosed with MS in his thirties and she credits his determination to maintain a normal life with strengthening her values.

  • Mr. Robinson was an athlete prior to his MS diagnosis.
  • Mrs. Obama says her father used two canes to move around because of the effects of MS.
