An ultrasound scan showing a clearly visible embryo with no heartbeat means that the embryo started to develop, but something went wrong. Usually when this happens it leads to a miscarriage. However, occasionally pregnancy hormone levels will stay high and mask what has happened. In this case you will not miscarry. This is known as a "missed miscarriage".
