Low Blood Pressure Research Note
By Reader's Digest Editors
A brief digest about this topic
For optimal health, doctors recommend keeping blood pressure below 120/80. But is there a point below which blood pressure is too low? While levels under 90/60 are technically considered low blood pressure, it’s only a problem if you’re experiencing dizziness or feeling faint—or serious symptoms such as shock. Other signs that low blood pressure might be dangerous include dehydration, intense thirst, blurred vision, nausea, cold and clammy skin, tiredness and depression. The cause could be an infection, certain medications, pregnancy, heart or hormone problems, an allergic reaction, serious blood loss, or a vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency.
Fast Facts:- Prolonged bed rest can cause temporary low blood pressure. So can standing up quickly after you’ve been sitting or lying down.
- Another common cause is dehydration—brought on by diarrhea, vomiting, strenuous exercise, fever or diuretic overuse.
- Drugs that can lower your blood pressure include some that treat depression, Parkinson’s disease, erectile dysfunction or heart problems.
- During the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, blood pressure often drops as your blood vessels widen and relax.
- A heart attack, heart valve disease, a very low heart rate and heart failure can lead to low blood pressure.
