Urinary retention (the inability to empty the bladder) that develops suddenly constitutes a medical emergency and prompt medical attention should be sought.1 For chronic urinary retention where you experience difficulty fully emptying the bladder over a period of time, Kegel exercises can be of benefit.1Biofeedback and bladder training exercises can also help to train and stimulate the nerves in the bladder and allow for a complete void.1
Fast Facts:
Self-catheterization or the placement of an indwelling catheter may be required to treat urinary retention.2
Sitting in a warm bathtub of water or running water may help stimulate the bladder in sudden, acute cases of urinary retention. However, if this measure does not work, seek emergency medical care.3
Other potential treatments which may help urinary retention include surgery for women with cystoceles or men with urethral stricture, as well as medications which treat prostate enlargement in men.4
