To assess the presence and magnitude of a phoria or a strabismus (tropia). The cover test assesses the presence or absence of motor fusion. When motor fusion is present (ie, when there is no strabismus), the cover test determines the magnitude of the demand placed on a patient’s fusional vergence system.
