Dr. Bernadine Healy is a cardiologist and educator. Dr. Healy earned her M.D. at Harvard Medical School, completing her cardiology and internal medicine training at John Hopkins University School of Medicine. She became the first woman to lead the National Institutes of Health, being appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1991. She also served as the president of the American Heart Association from 1998-1999, and president of the American Red Cross during the September 11, 2001 attacks. She is a senior writer for U.S. News and Report and has authored or co-authored over 200 papers on cardiovascular research and health and science policy.
