In college, Dr. Julie Levengood was a journalism minor and always knew how important it was to have the right information before she could write a story. Now as a physician, she makes sure her patients always have the correct information so they can understand their illness. “I think education is really important for patients,” she explains. “I want them to know as much as possible about their disease and always feel free to contact me if they need to know more or have a question.” Rheumatologists like Dr. Levengood specialize in taking care of disorders such as osteoarthritis, bone, joint and tendon problems, osteoporosis, tendonitis, as well as inflammatory diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis and other problems. “Rheumatology is a fascinating specialty. There are some problems that are very common such as osteoarthritis and other diseases like scleroderma, which many people have never heard of. Some of these diseases can affect not just the patient but the entire family as well.” Dr. Levengood dedicates a lot of time to osteoporosis management with her patients. All Reliant Medical Group rheumatologists are certified in reading bone density tests and consult on patients who have osteoporosis that is difficult to manage. “The field of osteoporosis management has really evolved. We now have tests to recognize it early and new medicines to treat this disease. We have also learned a lot about how exercise, calcium and vitamin D play such a key role in bone growth. Many people don’t realize that bone growth ends at age thirty in women, so it’s important to build bone when you are young and then maintain it when you are older to prevent osteoporosis.” Dr. Levengood is very interested in treating arthritis and participates in the yearly Arthritis Walk-Run sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation of Central Massachusetts. “I have been the team captain for Reliant Medical Group and also served as the medical chairperson. The Arthritis Walk-Run is not only an important way to raise money but also crucial for patient advocacy and I am very proud to participate.” Dr. Levengood believes in developing strong relationships with her patients. “I may see some patients just once, but many patients I see on a regular basis – especially the ones with chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I really enjoy getting to know them and helping them enjoy a better quality of life through some of the cutting-edge treatments we use here.” Dr. Levengood also enjoys working with her colleagues at Reliant Medical Group. “I really love the department. All of the rheumatologists are wonderful clinicians and are very personable. I like the multi-specialty aspect of practicing here where I have access to colleagues from every different field of medicine. If I have a question and need to ask someone all I have to do is call. I also like the fact that I am able to teach and lecture hospital residents and perform research trials while working here. It’s a very stimulating environment to practice in, and one that really benefits the patients.”
