Degenerative myelopathy is a slowly progressive disorder of the myelinated fibers in older large-breed dogs, especially German Shepherds. The primary sign is poor movement coordination that progresses to weakness. Owners often think the dog has hip dysplasia. Affected animals generally maintain urinary and fecal continence.
