Research Notes on Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation is given to patients before certain procedures, such as dental surgery. Conscious sedation causes an altered state of consciousness, which allows the patient to experience less pain and anxiety. The patient is still able to speak and respond during the procedure. This type of sedation also causes temporary amnesia that may cause the patient to not remember the procedure.1

Fast Facts:

  • Conscious sedation is safe. Lung and heart function are monitored carefully during the procedure.
  • 96% of all patients have no side effects from conscious sedation.
  • Normal activity can usually be resumed within 12 hours after conscious sedation, depending on the type of procedure.2
