Research Notes on Comedones

Comedones are better known as blackheads or whiteheads. Comedones are formed when skin debris, bacteria, and oil become trapped inside dilated hair follicles. They appear to be black due to the color of pigment, not dirt. Topical antibiotic or benzoyl peroxide may help unblock the comedones.1

Fast Facts:

  • Never use your fingers, tweezers, or comedone removers on blackheads or white heads. They may be pressed further down creating an infection.1
  • Touching infected areas can cause it to spread.1
  • From the Latin word comedo meaning glutton.2
