By Reader's Digest Editors

A brief digest about this topic

Alas, there are many causes. Chronic leg pain can can be related to faltering leg mechanics: the wear and tear, overuse or injuries to joints, bones, muscles, ligaments or tendons. Or it can be related to blood clots in the veins of your legs. Similarly, narrowed arteries can reduce blood flow to the legs, leading to pain that gets worse with exercise, but improves with rest. Other causes include bursitis, fibromyalgia, gout or types of arthritis. And sometimes, the pain doesn’t even originate in the leg: Spinal problems can cause pain that is felt in your leg, but actually arises in your lower back. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss specifics and get on the path to being pain-free.
