HPV, or human papilloma virus, is the virus that can cause genital warts, and certain strains of it can cause cervical cancer. It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the world today, and is spread by skin-to-skin contact. Using a condom (while helpful in lowering your risk of many other infections) won't necessarily provide protection against HPV, because the virus can be on the skin in an area not covered by the condom. You may have it and never have any signs or symptoms. Bookmark this page to keep these WisdomCards at your fingertips.
