Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia Research Note
By Reader's Digest Editors
A brief digest about this topic
At times, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia can look remarkably similar. Delusions and hallucinations—classic signs of schizophrenia—can also occur in the manic and depressive phases of bipolar brain disease. Up to 58% of people with severe bipolar disorder experience delusions and hallucinations. But are the two conditions related, or is it a coincidence? New research shows that both conditions share genetic roots. In one large study, having a brother or sister with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia dramatically increased a sibling’s risk of developing either one. And experts say a cross-over condition called schizoaffective disorder has elements of both.
Fast Facts:- Similar long-term treatment plans help both conditions: Anti-psychotics and other medications along with counseling.
- Sticking with treatment is proven to reduce the chances of a relapse in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
- Many people with schizophrenia also have bipolar-like mood swings, going through periods of mania or depression.
- Some people with schizoaffective disorder have just one episode of mania in their lives, while others have many relapses.
- Researchers have identified genetic “hot spots” that raise risk for both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
