ADHD and Panic Attacks Research Note

By Reader's Digest Editors

A brief digest about this topic

Though statistics about how many children with ADHD have panic attacks are hard to come by, panic disorder in children is common and treatable. Panic attacks may appear suddenly, without any cause. Their frightening symptoms include a racing heartbeat, nausea, difficulty breathing, and terror, among other scary feelings. Attacks can last for more than ten minutes. Children with ADHD who have underlying anxiety disorders could be prone to panic attacks, especially when they feel especially stressed. Exams, pop quizzes, oral presentations, and other situations for which children feel unprepared could trigger panic attacks in sensitive children. Any child who suffers a panic attack should be thoroughly evaluated by a health care practitioner.
