ADHD and Music Research Note
By Reader's Digest Editors
A brief digest about this topic
It makes intuitive sense that music might help ease symptoms of ADHD, simply for its power to relax and calm. Though some small studies seem to support this, researchers agree that more study is needed. In one study, music therapy in the classroom seemed to lessen impulsive and restless behaviors in a group of adolescent boys—over time, their scores on several measures of ADHD symptoms improved. Music therapists suggest that playing quiet classical music might help children with ADHD focus on work that requires concentration, and that playing jazz might help them focus when they're working in groups. Children with ADHD who love music may be able to become accomplished musicians, because they can tune in more completely to tasks that captivate them.
