ADHD Signs and Symptoms Research Note
By Reader's Digest Editors
A brief digest about this topic
ADHD symptoms include persistent inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Symptoms can emerge as early as the age of 2 or 3, but these may be easy to miss, since most healthy children are active and bounce from one activity to another. More typically, the symptoms get noticed once a child enters the more structured world of school. Suspect ADHD when these problems seem extreme: Inability to sit still or to listen when spoken to; distractibility; trouble with tasks requiring concentration; can't follow through on instructions; loses things; is forgetful; talks, runs, jumps, and climbs excessively; interrupts conversations and speaks out of turn. If your child's problems disappear when they're at home or with friends, they may not have ADHD.
